Війни списків дзеркал: чому знайти офіційне посилання складніше, ніж здається

Every darknet market needs an address, and every address needs to be found. That simple pairing has spawned an entire shadow industry of mirror lists, link directories and verification pages.

It has also spawned something darker: thousands of pixel-perfect clones built to steal logins and deposits. Finding one official link turns out to be a harder problem than finding the market itself.

A market with a thousand faces

The scale is not anecdotal. In a landmark study presented at the WWW 2019 conference, researchers crawled more than 21 million pages across roughly 100,000 Tor hidden services and identified 791 confirmed phishing sites targeting just five major services (Yoon et al., Doppelgaengers on the Dark Web). Their most striking finding involved Dream Market: of 114 second-level domains claiming to be the market, only four were authentic. Even more damning, the single most referenced Dream Market address across the dark web was a phishing domain, meaning attackers were actively out-promoting the real site.

The economics of the clone

Why bother? Because a cloned market is a cash machine. Victims enter credentials, the clone silently forwards or captures them, and escrow balances are drained before anyone notices. The researchers found many operators brute-force vanity onion prefixes such as 'bitcoinfog' or 'pwoah' precisely because users trust memorable fragments over full 56-character v3 addresses. The returns can be enormous. French OSINT firm Aleph Networks documented one fraudster who claimed to have earned around 200 bitcoins, roughly 1.5 million euros at the time, from more than 800 decoy shops (Aleph Networks). Against that upside, generating a new onion address costs almost nothing. Europol's latest threat assessment notes that law enforcement pressure has shortened the lifespan of criminal sites, so mirror sites now spring up rapidly to survive takedowns (IOCTA 2024). Legitimate resilience and hostile cloning use identical plumbing, which is exactly the problem.

PGP signatures and the OMG standard

The main defense is cryptographic. In 2019 the verification site Dark.Fail published the Onion Mirror Guidelines, a spec requiring markets to host a /pgp.txt key file, a PGP-signed /mirrors.txt listing official addresses, and a /canary.txt refreshed every 14 days (dark.fail/spec/omg.txt).
The idea is elegant: a mirror claim is only trustworthy if it carries a signature from a key you already trust, obtained from somewhere other than the server making the claim.
That last caveat matters. The maintainers of the go-omg validation library deliberately refuse to download keys from the same host being verified, noting that checking a signature with a key fetched from that very server protects nobody. Our onion validator follows the same principle. Adoption is real but uneven. A 2022 TNO study found nearly 2,000 domains hosting valid OMG files, yet also documented compliant, partial and stale implementations side by side, including markets whose canaries had gone quiet months earlier.

Directories become the target

Link directories were supposed to be the answer. Instead they became prey too. Academic analysis presented at APWG eCrime 2020 documented lookalike imitations of Dark.Fail itself, including darkfail.com and dark.fail spoofs, alongside the long-running pattern of indexing wikis being cloned (Phishing With A Darknet). Aleph Networks traced perhaps the sharpest irony: the community-run Tor Scam List, created after one user was scammed six times by decoy mirrors, was itself replicated 1,440 times, all malicious copies. Many fakes cross-linked each other to manufacture credibility, a kind of inverted web of trust.

How to find a link you can actually trust

Given all this, treat any single source as unproven until it checks out cryptographically:
  • Verify mirror announcements against the market's official PGP key, imported from a trusted channel.
  • Compare the full 56-character address character by character, never just the prefix; see our address verification guide.
  • Prefer directories that publish signed mirror files under the OMG standard over anonymous wikis.
  • Distrust search results, forum posts and Telegram channels ranking for market names plus the word 'link'.
None of this makes directory browsing safe in an absolute sense. It makes failure detectable, which on a network engineered for plausible fakes is the best available outcome. The mirror wars will continue, but signatures at least tell you which side a given list is fighting on.

Bitcoin Fog:
