Рік потому після Archetyp: takedown, що подер карту darknet-у

For five years, Archetyp Market was the closest thing the Western darknet had to an institution. Then German-led police dismantled it over a single June weekend.

A year on, the brand has stayed dead. What replaced it is not a successor platform but a scattered, more fragile ecosystem - and a defendant finally facing trial in Frankfurt.

How Operation Deep Sentinel unfolded

Between June 11 and 13, 2025, around 300 officers from Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden - with US support and coordination through Europol and Eurojust - struck simultaneously at the platform's people and infrastructure, as Europol announced. On day one, a special unit of the Spanish National Police arrested the alleged founder and administrator, a 30-year-old German national, at his home in Barcelona. Dutch officers took the marketplace's servers offline in the Netherlands. Enforcement in Germany and Sweden targeted one moderator and six of the highest-volume vendors, with roughly 20 properties searched, The Register reported. In total, investigators seized 47 smartphones, 45 computers, narcotics and assets worth about EUR 7.8 million. There was deliberate choreography, too: when Archetyp first went dark, users saw an ordinary maintenance page. Only days later did police swap in the seizure banner, buying time to secure evidence before the community grasped what had happened.

The scale of what fell

At seizure, Archetyp counted more than 600,000 user accounts, some 3,200 vendors and over 17,000 listings, with lifetime turnover estimated at least EUR 250 million. It was Monero-only and one of the last major platforms openly tolerating fentanyl listings, as Reuters noted. Nothing else in the Western scene matched its tenure.
"With this takedown, law enforcement has taken out one of the dark web's longest-running drug markets, cutting off a major supply line for some of the world's most dangerous substances," said Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Europol's Deputy Executive Director of Operations.

No credible relaunch ever came

The usual chorus predicted a quick return under the same banner. It never happened. Within 48 hours, copycats calling themselves "Archetyp V2" appeared alongside refund scammers impersonating well-known vendors. Every claimant was rapidly flagged on forums as an impostor. A full year later, no credible successor carries the name - a marked contrast to earlier eras when seized brands were routinely resurrected.

Fragmentation, not resurrection

Displaced users flooded the discussion hub Dread within hours, coordinating migrations over XMPP and Tox while posting PGP-signed proofs of identity. The early landing zones were Abacus and TorZon Market - and that influx proved fatal for one of them. Abacus posted its best month ever in June 2025, roughly USD 6.3 million in sales, according to TRM Labs. Weeks later it vanished in what the firm assessed as a likely exit scam. The refugees from one collapse had walked straight into another. What remains is structural change. Analysts count a scatter of younger mid-sized platforms - TorZon, DrugHub, MGM Grand - while new market launches fell 42 percent year-over-year even before Archetyp fell. Most newcomers are low-effort script jobs built for quick profits, not institutions in waiting. Vendors, meanwhile, increasingly sell directly through Telegram and Signal, skipping escrow entirely. That means faster deals and lower fees, but no protection and far less forensic visibility. For buyers and investigators alike, trust has become a personal risk rather than a platform feature.

Enforcement adapts - and the case reaches court

Law enforcement has changed shape too. Rather than mass multi-market sweeps like 2014's Operation Onymous, agencies now favor intelligence-led strikes, sometimes covert ones that let users assume an exit scam while evidence accumulates. Vendors get sustained attention because they cannot migrate their freedom to a new onion address. The legal machinery is grinding forward. In early August 2026, Frankfurt prosecutors charged the alleged operator, a 31-year-old extradited from Spain, accusing him of narcotics trafficking at scale and some EUR 20 million in personal revenue - with up to 15 years in prison at stake, per the BKA. He has reportedly given a partial confession. Archetyp joined AlphaBay and Hydra in the museum of seized front pages - and its brand stayed dead. Fragmentation may make the scene harder to decapitate, or it may just multiply single points of failure. Either way, the lesson of our market watch coverage holds: verify before you trust, and track current status on our onion status list.
